Spotlight Interview originally published October 2024.

Hello! I’m Mikael and I make The Butler Did It over here! I’ve been nominated for two other comics: “Shrapnel Scars” in 2022 and “Freak” in 2024 (as part of the Let Her Be Evil -anthology). Being from a long line of farmers, I’m an outdoorsy person by nature and I love gardening.

How long have you been creating comics?

I’ve been drawing comics online since around 2018 but before that, I was an avid writer! I’ve been working on comics part-time since 2022.

What do you enjoy drawing most?

I enjoy drawing women and older men, preferably together. Age-gaps have always been my thing, but they became especially so after I started creating The Butler Did It and got to know this amazing community!

What are some of your biggest inspirations in your work?

I adore the art of Alex Raymond, Matthieu Bonhomme, and Greg Smallwood! Smooth inks and simplified realism are my weaknesses. Pepper in a little bit of midcentury style and I’m hooked. When I’m writing, I’m inspired by anything and everything! Hiking or traveling tends to bring out the best ideas in me.

What do you like about erotica and/or drawing erotic comics?

That people expect sex in the stories! I love weaving together a plot that centers around sex because there are so many untold stories from that perspective. And you can really let loose with it! That’s why I love Filthy Figments; here the erotic part of the storytelling is encouraged, and you get to work a muscle that rarely gets any exercise elsewhere.

What was your favorite project you’ve worked on for Filthy Figments thus far?

The Butler Did It!

Recommend a few of your favorite Filthy Figments comics from the archive. Tells us WHY you love them.

I adore the collection Ardent by S. W. Searle. The stories are so earnest, gentle, and quiet. My
favorite from the collection is “The Shepherd’s Offering”. The religious undertones and the main
character’s shame hit the spot for me. So many things are unsaid that you can immediately grasp.
Perfect storytelling.

I also really love Niki’s Under His Apron (found in the Bruised Fruit Anthology)! As someone with a (somewhat) heavy accent, it fills me with joy to have a character speak broken English. Not only that, but Käthe and Georgi feel like two exceptionally real people; like I’ve always known them but can’t place them.
