In a small village during a great famine, where crops are dying and jobs are growing scarce, a sudden opportunity appears for a woman of working age: there is a house in the woods that needs tending. Some say it’s owned by a human-eating witch who bakes girls; others whisper the house belongs to an ogre who kills anyone on sight. All agree is too dangerous. It’s not worth the risk. Maria, the eldest daughter of seven, from an impoverished family of farmers, decides to try her luck.
